Candidates for residency may be ensembles at any stage of professional development; emerging, or mid-career for whom a residency at Avaloch might make a significant impact on their careers, or established ensembles for whom the unique environment and support will offer refreshment and inspiration.
Avaloch Farm Music Institute encourages and welcomes the participation of musicians from all backgrounds and does not discriminate with regard to age, race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, religion, marital status or nation of origin in its admission policies.
Length of Stay
Length of residencies can vary from one to three weeks.
New Music Initiative
The New Music Initiative brings together ensembles working with a composer or collaborator on new material, for intensive farm-wide new music themed weeks. Ensembles interested in completing a New Music Initiative project may apply for residencies at any point during the five-month season. We will curate NMI weeks throughout the season, based on the availability of groups which are accepted with a relevant project.
We will also accept ensemble/composer collaborations during weeks that are not designated as exclusively New Music Initiative times.
Applications for the 2019 season will be accepted from December 1, 2018 to March 15, 2019. Residency awards will be announced by April 10, 2019.
Dates for the 2019 season are June 1-November 1.
Each ensemble must submit an online application form. The accompanying work examples should be videos that include at least two pieces of contrasting style, and should be representative of the ensemble’s work within the past six months. We accept submissions via DVD or online link (e.g. YouTube, Vimeo).
DVDs should be sent to: Avaloch Farm Music Institute, PO Box 175, Ashfield, MA 01330, and must arrive by March 15th.
Ensembles who have already attended Avaloch may choose to send current examples of work, but it is not required. If one or more members of a newly applying ensemble has attended before, work examples are still necessary.
Please see the application form here.
There is a non-refundable application fee of $75. This fee will be paid via PayPal upon submission of the online application form.
Two references must be sent by musicians who are familiar with your work, and can assess your accomplishments and goals. You must contact your references. The references must arrive by March 15th, 2019. They should be emailed to: Deborah Sherr, Executive Director, [email protected]
Returning ensembles do not need to provide references. If one or more members of a newly applying ensemble have attended Avaloch in the past with a different group, references for the new group must be provided.
Once accepted, ensembles who wish to attend must send in a fully refundable cancellation fee. The fee of $100 per individual participant in the ensemble, will be refunded in full after the residency is complete. The preferred method of payment is by check, which will not be deposited unless there is a cancellation.
